Author's Note
As soon as I read the word, spice, I instantly thought of spice caravans and deserts, but, of course, these sci-fi merchants aren't travelling by camel.

The Whisper of Winds

by Sophie Duncan

The winds told me of him before the caravan appeared on the horizon and I watched it approach, the floaters groaning with sweet spices from beyond the Great Ridge.

Another exotic held my attention, though.

I stood alone in the street, the foolish boy not afraid of strangers, for I knew better than the Elders. Dust flew as the incomers settled their craft, but I fixed on him as he climbed off his sandhover, pushing back a deep hood. Tall, dark of skin with even darker eyes, he gazed evenly on me, not knowing me yet, but I knew him.

  1. SO the word was spice? I liked your post about what you thought of when you read the word spice. I especially liked the phrase the foolish boy not afraid of strangers

Thanks for responding, I'm glad you liked the drabble.

  2. Nice. I like how with a few choice words you've drawn a picture of the boy and his community, also giving a strong sense of things fated to come.

    1. Thanks.

I agonised over this one, chopping and changing every single word at least once, and mostly more, because I had such a clear picture in my head and I wanted to capture it all. I'm finding when words are limited that I can do a lot with the reader's inference, i.e. what's between the words that isn't written - I really think drabbles are improving my word skills and I hope it'll come through in my longer stuff :).

  3. Some day you must take these drabbles and make longer stories out of them.

I want to know what comes next. The slow seduction or are you going to torture them first.

    1. A few of them have sparked off something that is lasting in my brain, so they will materialise. This one had so much back story in my head before I started it was silly, but I have to work on an actual plot ;P

    1. I will get to writing some longer stuff once A to Z is over and I'm not writing blog posts every waking hour ;P
